Can you eat too much fiber?
Written by admin on April 16, 2009 – 1:01 pm -Okay so I tend to eat 100% or a little less of my fiber each day. Well apparently with the foods I bought this week, I shall consume 200% or similiar, not counting fresh blueberries, granola, and almonds, and sometimes extra whole grain cereal. Is it harmful to consume this much fiber? Will be body become used to this amount of fiber and require it everyday, after 5-7 straight days? Also I was just reading about colon cleanses; will this work like a cleanse and even remove parasites (since numbers up to 85% of Americans have them).
Also I am on a dairy free diet since the doctor thinks I may be lactose intolerant (which if I am not and have symptoms when I go back in a week she will then test me for parasites and bacteria). So being dairy free for one more week, I am avoiding foods like cheese which are notorious for slowing us down, and instead mixing my veggies with pasta and lots of extra soy products this week (soymilk and soy yogurt).
Fiber's the one that doesn't technically digest, right?
It's kind of like an organic scrubber brush for your bowels. I would guess that your ability to handle more fiber all depends on the state of your kidneys and liver, and how they react to it.
The human digestive system is pretty good at handling things, I say don't worry about it unless you're over the age of 50 or under the age of 12. If pain occurs, seek medical attention.
You can also just call this one in to a hospital/nutritionist usually at no charge beyond the phone call itself. They should have a detailed explanation they can give you in as little as 5-10 minutes.
